I don't know if folks are still stopping by, but I'm mostly on tumblr now.

Here's a little painting I did awhile ago for an in-house art show at CN - I jumped at the chance to do a tribute to Samurai Jack. I really enjoyed making up a place that Jack might have visited on one of his adventures.

Sorry I haven't posted in awhile! I've been better about updating my tumblr. Here's a new digital painting I did recently. It's also available as a print in my Etsy shop.

How do you feel about this's and that's? I'll have some of those at the CTN Animation Expo this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, so please head over to T-16 so we can exchange pleasantries. For those who prefer more specific descriptions, I'll have prints and paintings to see and/or keep. :)

See you around!

Yesterday's Tomorrow - Ascend

This coming Saturday is the opening of what should be a really terrific group show at Nucleus about retro future — Yesterday's Tomorrow. The artist list is trim and full of goodness. Event details: http://www.gallerynucleus.com/gallery/exhibition/314

Here's my painting for the show, followed by a digital comp for what was going to be a second piece, but life told me I was out of time to do another painting.

Ascend - 10" x 20" - Cel-vinyl Acrylic

BTW, trying to paint a perfect circle with a brush is difficult... I did my best.

Here's the color comp:

Hanna Barbera Show @ Van Eaton Gallery

THE HB SHOW

April 6th, 2013
6pm - 10pm

Here's the link.

You should know something about me. I love old Hanna Barbera. The charming cartoons, Ed Benedict's masterful designs, the BG paintings by Art Lozzi, Fernando Montealegre, Robert Gentle and others (all overseen by Walt Peregoy) and especially the Golden Books! Greats like Hawley Pratt, Mel Crawford, Al White, Norm McGary and others captured these characters at their best. Their work has been hugely inspirational to me and while I can never hope to be as good as the names above, I was very happy to be invited to participate in the HB group show at Van Eaton Gallery.

I will now shut my face and show you my painting for the show, which was super fun to do. Also, I included some some unhelpful process photos and even a shot of my dumpy little work area, below.

Adventure Time

Had a busy, but terrific weekend with Marshall Vandruff's superb workshop, checking out the awesome Paranorman panel and attending the super-packed Adventure Time group show at Gallery Nucleus.

Here's the painting I did for the show... my first time using Turner brand gouache (instead of the usual WN) and I'm already a believer. It handles perfectly, comes in more (even vibrant) colors, is easier on brushes and for the amount, about 1/4 the cost of Winsor Newton.

For this one I had a few different ideas (some of which were funny) but opted to stay away from a mash-up and do just an original-ish idea and monster of my own. I was also excited to try to play with some diamonds and trying to achieve lighting effects that are simple digitally, but take a bit of planning in real paint.

Nature Break Title Cards

I was asked by my pal Mike to design and paint these title cards for his Nature Break web shorts for Shut Up Cartoons/Smosh. Animation was added by Mike and his wife, Anna on the final (at the link above).

Quick, fun little exercises. Photoshop.

Speaking of painting... here's a recent one for the show that I'm co-curating with my awesome art pal, Sandra. We've put together an exceptional line-up for the show, I think.

Quails Alight

Last week I participated in a little employee art show for Bento Box. This is the painting I did for it, and to kill two birds with one stone (sorry), it was also a commission for a friend. He's a little twisted as you might've deduced from the burning baby quail.

Emerald City Comic Con

Hey gang,

I'll be making a visit to the good ol' Northwest for the Emerald City Comic Con this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I plan to be selling a bunch of prints, some medium-size originals and will be doing some little, business card-size paintings at the table. Please come by and have a chat if you're gonna be around!

I'll be sharing BOOTH 108 with my pals Andrew Wilson, Wade Schin, Mark Behm and (new ECCC debutante) Martin Ontiveros! Sure to be a kick in the trousers.

To start it off, here's a robutt with a slight resemblance to a well known Seattle landmark (and in an emerald-y color scheme to boot).

See you soon!

Clone Wars BGs/Key paintings

A nice fellow I know from the internets is selling 4 original BGs/keys from Tartakovsky's Clone Wars series on ebay. Magnificent Tail

I used gouache for this one and have to say, I hit a point where I was absolutely enjoying the painting process. I dig the way it handles so much that I'm thinking to work in gouache over cel vinyl acrylic whenever possible.

Nightmare Before Christmas Show at Galerie Arludik

My talented pal Seb invited me to participate in my first international art show later this month in Paris at Galerie Arludik, in honor of Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas. He's put together a great roster for it, so it's going to be a treat to see everyone's work. My only gripe is not being able to attend the opening in person... I hear this Paris place isn't too shabby.

Monstroville Graveyard BG

This was my final BG for the Monstroville pitch. I had fun pushing it in the direction of "feature", but still hopefully retain the cartoon sensibilities. Designed by the great Josh Gay and painted by myself.

Hope you like!
